Thank you for your interest in the Junior League of Des Moines!  The Junior League of Des Moines has a membership of more than 400 women from all walks of life. Some of our members are in the workforce while others stay-at-home. We are single and married; young and old; yet we are all dedicated to improving the community through our volunteer efforts!

FAQs of Becoming a New Member

  • How do I become a member?
    Send us a completed New Member Interest Form and attend our monthly New Member meetings, currently beginning in the fall. 
  • Are there meetings that I need to attend?
    Yes, for your first year you are required to attend 5 out of 7 new member classes and at least out of 10 General Membership Meetings (GMM). General Membership Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month (no meetings July & January. September is 2nd Monday due to Labor Day). Social hour begins at 5pm with GMM from 6-7 pm. New Member Meetings follow directly after from 7-8 pm. Once you become an active member you will continue to attend the GMMs. Additional committee meetings and volunteer opportunities will be plentiful at your discretion.
  • Are there service hours required?
    Yes. Members are required to give 10 volunteer hours per year. 
  • What is the financial obligation?
    All Active Members have annual dues of $225 (due March 1 of each year for the following year's dues). There is also a $50 one time joining fee due at the second New Member meeting. Opportunities for additional donations and fundraising will be available and encouraged. Active members are also required to donate once per year to our thrift store fundraiser, Bargain Basket, in-kind donation of clothing, shoes, accessories. 
  • What happens once I am a member?
    You pick a JLDM Council that fits your interests, needs, and talents. Meeting and financial obligations continue on an annual basis. You also continue to learn how to be the best community volunteer and leader.

Professional Development and Training Opportunities

Through the training and experience that our members receive, many have gone on to be actively engaged throughout our community: in business, schools, churches, non-profit boards and elected political positions. We pride ourselves on being an organization that trains women to build a better community!

Our Current Signature Project:

Junior League of Des Moines is currently focused on the issue of foster care with a focus on developing positive relationships with teenage girls impacted by foster care.

The Next Step

If you decide to become a member of the Junior League of Des Moines, you will gain training as a "new member." The new member program will allow you to better understand the history of our League, our mission, vision and goals and above all, the opportunity to make new friends.
